DEWA, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority who is responsible for supplying electricity and water resources in Dubai is implementing Solar Photovoltaic cells to generate electricity. They believe that they could meet their electricity demands through solar PV cells. Issues have been arising during the installations. At present they are facing the challenges of

  • Heating up of Solar PV cells in desert regions.
  • Accumulation of dirt and debris on their Solar PV cells
  • Rise of residual currents in solar photovoltaic cell
  • Sudden tripping while islanding

Challenges and their requirements

Following are the challanges and the requirements of DEWA

Developing an integrated cooling system for Solar PV cells

Solar cells works with the light energy from the sun. Heat plays a vital role in generating power output. Also the curse of heat sustained for long time in the cell led to diminish the power output. Particularly In the regions like desert there will be the cooling medium that works continuously to drop the temperature of the solar PV cells. Thus PV cells need an integrated cooling system to prevent the cells from heating up to the maximum extent that decreases the power output.

Developing customized and integrated cleaning solutions for PV cells

Several issues would have been raised while installing solar PV cells in the desert region. Accumulation of sand, debris, and other dirt particles are the most  common issues while operating solar PV cells. This would considerably affect the working of cells. Light particles and the waves would scatter due to the presence of accumulated matters. To overcome this, there is a need to develop customized and integrated cleaning solutions for PV cells.

Developing a solution to reduce and eliminate residual current for solar PV cells

Due to its renewable features, solar PV cells are growing faster day by day. But all the cells are designed within the confined space. If it is a wider area then there must be a specialized room to inspect the generation of residual current. To overcome the generation of residual current, solar PV cells are being installed in confined space. Residual current arises in both the inverter side and load side. Hence there is a need to develop a solution to reduce and eliminate residual current. You can also provide a design of customized inverter that blocks the residual current.

Developing a solution to govern Loss of Mains (LoM)

Loss of electricity supply to the main network will create a hazard environment for personnel and the solar PV equipment. To prevent this Loss of Mains protection is implemented for safer operations. This leads to power islanding. Current methods like Rate of change of frequency and Vector shift would not allow tripping under all the LoM circumstances. These methods would be suitable for low capacity solar PV cells. But solar PV cells with high capacity would need a better solution to govern Loss of Mains (LoM). Solutions with communication control of enabling tripping is most welcomed.

These are solutions needed to sort out challenges faced by DWEA in installing Solar Phovoltaic cells.
