What is an EV charging station?

An electronic vehicle comprises of electric motor and a power source for the electric motor. The power source can be of two types

  • Electric power source

  • Hydrogen power source

These power sources can be able to provide power only up to a certain limit, after that it needs to be recharged. Charging stations are used to recharge these power sources. The charging station to an electric vehicle is as same as the fuel station to the gasoline vehicles.

As the production of EVs is increasing day by day all the nations are planning to set up a large number of charging stations for easy charging. According to the Society of Manufacturers of EV said that there are nearly 1800 charging stations around the nation.

How do EV charging stations work?

As said earlier charging an EV is similar to charging a mobile phone. You just need to pluck the charger into the charging port. Most of the EV use lithium-ion batteries as a power source. Charging stations can be divided into three categories.

  • Level-1 charging station

  • Level-2 charging station

  • Level-3 charging station

Level-1 Charging station

This is the type of charging station is found in residential areas (home). It consists of a 120 V AC power source. It doesn’t need any installed equipment. As the power source is low you need to charge more than 10 hours to get a complete charge. On average one hour of charging, your car can go up to 2 to 5 miles.

Level-2 charging station

These types could be installed with the help of an electrician. Here the power source varies from 208 V for commercial and 240 V for residential. On average one hour of charging, your car can go up to 10 to 60 miles.

Level-3 charging station

These types of charging stations are only for commercial and industrial purposes and require additional installation equipment. On average of 20 minutes charging your car can go upto60 to 100 miles.

Only specialized vehicles such as Nissan leaf and Mitusbhisi ‘i’ can be charged by a level-3 charging station. It can also be known as DC Fast chargers. Mostly hybrid vehicles fall under the category of level-1 and level-2. Tesla model cars have separate Superchargers for charging.

What is the cost of charging?

It is estimated to be around Rs 160 to Rs 200 to get the full charge in charging stations. For Example, let us assume the electricity cost to be 7kwh, then Rs 350 would de the cost for charging Tesla model-3

In this way, charging stations work in India. To increase the usage of EVs we need to increase the number of charging stations.
